Description:
Be part of it with i-to-i! Our goal is to achieve 400 years of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008. So far we have achieved 325 years which when broken down means we achieved the following: - Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world - A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centers - Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more - At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need - More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars Love working with children? Travelers aren't alone in making tracks to see Kuala Lumpur, with its space age architecture and pristine litter free streets; they're joined by people from rural areas hoping to play a role in the country's economic expansion. The increased population puts extra pressure on the city's infrastructure and inevitably some people lose out, which is where you can help! With our partner project in the city you will provide valuable assistance to children in marginalised communities who have been abandoned and orphaned. You'll help build social and educational skills, providing them with a positive role model (and the project staff with a much needed helping hand). Don't forget our TEFL certification is included to make sure you're fully prepared. Find out more about i-to-i, watch their short video here: http://video.i-to-i.com/site-videos/video.html
Highlights:
What were the highlights of your trip that you couldn't wait to tell your friends about? "The support received from the staff at t-ratana - especially Christine and uncle Tan. Christine made me feel so welcome and helped me to make the most of my experience and without her I would not have gained the same experience that I have gained through her guidance and kindness." (Gemma Taylor) This is a great opportunity to work with disadvantaged children who have been abandoned, orphaned or separated from their families. Many of these children hail from marginalised communities who have been left out of Malaysia's recent economic development. You can make a huge difference to the lives of these children at risk by providing them with a positive role model, building their social skills and confidence, helping with their education and giving the project staff a much-needed helping hand.
Qualifications:
Volunteers most of all for these projects must have a love of children and be committed to the project. You will need to be flexible and be willing to get involved in anything that is asked of you. You must also be aware that the children you are working with are very lively and also disruptive and will need perseverance and tolerance when working with them. To ensure that you get the most out of and contribute fully to your placement a pro-active attitude is essential.
