Volunteer to teach deaf children in central Kenya
Kenya
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: All year.
Description:
The school is located at Mukurue-ini division in Kenya's Central Province. Mukuru-ini is rich in indigenous tall green trees with rivers and a climate that switches between warm sunny and chilly misty patterns. The school is as special as the community surrounding it. Started in 1988 with only ten hearing impaired boys, Rev. Muhoro was the first school of its kind, today, there are two others bringing the total number to three in the whole country. The school was later on integrated to accommodate girls and boys with hearing ability. It is today a geyser of knowledge to more than 200 students. Though the school has achieved a lot through corporate sponsorships, a lot still stands to done to bring it any where near acceptable standards. Once placed, a volunteer could take on a number of activities the prime of the all being teaching. As for the medical or counseling experts, a schedule that would ensure time for consultation with students for either medication or inspirational discussion and advice could be arranged. The school has enough room for games. Sports' funs could therefore join the students on the field for a game of football, volleyball, netball or athletics. Those with skills in various games could take this opportunity to introduce and coach games of their interest. Volunteers are welcome to get innovative and initiate useful programs (educational or economic) during their stay.
Highlights:
The school is situated 45 minutes away from Nyeri town, where it is possible to find all things modern - from Internet to pubs and five star safari clubs. This part of the country has a beautiful topography that is well covered by tall and green trees that gives a perfect setting for bird watching, or evening walks. For the adventurous, Mt Kenya is only an hour away, thus an attempt to climb to any of its three peaks would be a fulfilling move. One could also visit the Aberdares National Park home to some of the biggest rhinos in the world. The park is also rich in bird life and those wishing to have a glimpse of some of Africa's cats are likely to have their wishes fulfilled. Aberdare's is less visited by tourists so you can often enjoy seeing wildlife alone. Lastly you could take a couple of days out to visit Nakuru national park. A bird lovers paradise. Here you can see the world famous flamingos, over one million of them! A world class spectacle.

This placement would be perfect for anyone wishing to live and work in a set up with a mixture of able and disabled children.
