Detours Abroad: Projects in Sri Lanka

  Sri Lanka
    Colombo Central

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks

Description: Orphanage Work, Teaching English

In Sri Lanka, volunteers have a few options. Firstly, based in Polonnaruwa, (central north) you can teach English in rural schools to Singhalese children aged 6-14 years who have never learnt English before. The schools are very basic with few teaching aids. Volunteers create their own lesson plans. The kids are quite musical so it is possible to teach music and singing as well as sports.

Another option is to work at an orphanage just outside Colombo. Here, you can teach and generally providing much needed and appreciated care and companionship.

Detours Abroad: Projects in Sri Lanka

Highlights: Sri Lanka is a beautiful island off the eastern tip of India, with a fantastic mix of ancient cities, superb beaches, lush green forests and tea plantations. Sri Lankans are very friendly, keen to make you feel welcome and love any opportunity to talk cricket!

Stretching 433km from north to south and 244km at its widest point, it's a similar size to Tasmania, which allows for easy exploring. The highest peak is Mt Pidurutalagala, close to Nuwara Eliya, however the spectacular Adam's Peak is more famous.

The population of Sri Lanka is approximately 20 million. The Sinhalese make up approx 74% of the population and they speak Sinhala. The dominant religion of Sri Lanka is Buddhism. This philosophy can be seen in daily life throughout the country.

Qualifications: Any special skills you have will be gladly received. It is essential to bring enthusiasm and an open mind. Bring a smile, commitment and a desire to meet the local people. The key to a successful volunteer experience is a desire to be involved.
