Community Work with Children in Quito, Ecuador
Ecuador
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
Be part of it with i-to-i! Our goal is to achieve 400 years of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008. So far we have achieved 325 years which when broken down means we achieved the following: - Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world - A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centers - Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more - At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need - More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars Do you want to go up in the world and help children do the same? It's not just Quito's high altitude that leaves you out of breath; like most of South America it attacks your senses as soon as you step off the plane. The nearby volcanoes trap clouds over the city creating uniquely dramatic skies which compete with the picture-perfect architecture on the ground for your attention. Our partner project in the city works with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and makes sure they spend less time on the streets and more time with people who care about them. You will help to prepare academic, artistic and social activities for street and working children, and keep track of their progress. We will provide you with our TEFL certification to help prepare you for a challenging but rewarding project. Highlights:
What were the highlights of your trip that you couldn't wait to tell your friends about? "Working with the children was the undoubted highlight. We sang songs, played games, colored in pictures, read them stories and played with toys. We taught them basic things like being able to write their own names and count to 10. It was really rewarding." (Madeleine Fraser) Fundacion Ninez Internacional is a non-governmental organisation with limited resources for its operations. These health care projects are based in the north and south of Quito in some of the poorest areas, where many people live in illegal housing. Each of its five sub-projects has a clinic with a doctor, a dentist and some administrative and teaching staff. In total, the projects serve approximately 14,000 children in Quito, aged from 3 to 19. This is a huge number for such small teams to service, and so every volunteer is needed in order to assist in the running of the project.
Qualifications:
For your health work experience in Quito project, a knowledge of first aid and basic Spanish would be preferable but is not essential. A love for children is essential, as is patience and empathy to both the children's situation and the restrictions placed on the project's team, by way of limited resources. A CV is required to be approved for this project.
