Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year Round - Monthly Departures
Description:
The school teaches students aged 12-18 and is funded by the government. The headmaster, Mr. Baidoo, is eager to expand projects in the areas of agriculture, sports and recreation and science. They operate 10 months of the year and teach all subjects to their pupils. The school is working to expand projects in the areas of agriculture, sports and recreation and science. They are interested in having volunteers who could assist teaching in classes, and help them continue to organize these extra projects. Some current ideas include: building a volley ball net, softball field, tennis court, working on agriculture projects (ie. composting, raising snails, bee keeping, corn growing), assisting with athletics, music, dance.
Highlights:
* Assist teacher in the classroom (subject choice is up to the volunteer). * With donation of a computer, volunteers could teach computer skills to students. Organize extra-curricular programs (athletics, music). * Assist with agriculture projects (raising snails, bee keeping, maize farm, teak tree growing, compost). * Volunteers could help school get donations of computers, science equipment, materials for athletics projects, agricultural materials, or cash to fund such projects.
Qualifications:
An interest in teaching and working with children would be an asset. Also, any interest or experience with agriculture (forestry, corn farming, alternative (non-timber) forest products) would be great as this is an area the school is trying to educate students in without much background knowledge. Other assets include adaptability, patience, flexibility, positive attitude, hard-working, self-motivated.
