Ghana Teaching/Building Placements - Jansa Roman Catholic Primary School
Ghana
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year Round - Monthly Departures
Description:
The school has kindergarten and primary students, and teaches them English, Math, Science, & Environmental Studies. They started this school because the small children were unable to walk the 5km to Nsuta for school each day (The Junior Secondary School, and Senior Secondary School are still in Nsuta). It is a very small school, with only 3 teachers (one of these being the headmaster). The number of staff is too small, and their requests for help are not being met. They currently have no teachers for the kindergarden students. The school could also benefit from new ideas for improvements around the school, or from materials that the volunteer could bring along with them.
Highlights:
Some specific tasks volunteers could be asked to do: - Help teaching English and Math - Work as kindergarten teachers - Run extra-curricular activities (sports, music) - Help tutor children individually based on need - Assist looking after children, helping cook meals at lunch time (*optional based on interests of volunteer)
Qualifications:
Volunteers interested in this placement should be comfortable working in a rural setting and able to adapt and work with children. Being motivated and creative will be great assets! It will be important to be tolerant, patient, have a positive attitude, and be ready to receive children (not afraid to touch them or get close to them). Volunteers should also be self-motivated, many of the tasks the volunteer takes on can be of their own initiative This placement would not be suitable for impatient, insensitive people or people who don't like being touched, or having children invade their personal space.
