Description:
African Hope Foundation of Ghana is a not-for-profit organization, dedicated to improving the lives of people who have been infected with HIV/AIDS. In 1998, it was founded as a non-governmental organization within the Kumasi region of Ghana, West Africa. Apart from working with individuals who have been infected with HIV/AIDS this organization is committed to assisting local initiatives to achieve sustainable development. AHFOG philosophy seeks to strengthen marginalized communities, women and youth to realize their own strengths and how they can be applied to face the different challenges of the world. AHFOG helps to empower vulnerable individuals to make a livelihood on a sustainable basis and live in dignity. They are committed to educating and preventing the greater spread of STIs and HIV/AIDS. In addition they try to assist those in marginalized communities to develop sustainable skills for a better quality of life. AHFOG currently runs an all girls vocational institute which is in need of volunteers to teach academics (English, math, business, health and hygiene) to the students. Volunteers can also assist in giving HIV/AIDS education presentations to the commercial sex workers, people living with HIV/AIDS, or schools groups. Administratively, volunteers could assist with office duties, promotional materials, and updating information for the website.
Highlights:
- Teaching at the Gisela Wurth-Boahen Vocational Institute (girls ages 14-25) in basic academics: English, Math, Business, Science, etc. - Home-based visitation of HIV Patients. - Facilitating in Peer education and Public education on HIV/AIDS (to different vulnerable groups). - Assisting in the office (typing proposals, creating promotional materials, etc.) - Collecting statistics on HIV/AIDS & STI's from hospitals or setting up a drop-in center for individuals who are HIV positive.
Qualifications:
Volunteers with a varitey of skills and abilities are welcome to assist with this project. If you have any teaching background or knowledge about setting up workshops your skills are desperately needed. Flexible, patient, motivated, self-directed. Some other valuable skills or training would be: HIV/AIDS Awareness Training, Sexual & Reproductive Health Training, Health & Hygiene Training, Medical Student, Pre-Medical Student, Nutritionist, Child & Youth Worker (Certified), Early Childhood Education, Grant Applications/Fundraising, Program Proposal Writing, Social Worker (MSW or Student), General Administration, Teaching.

Cost Include Description:
Upon arrival in country our staff will pick you up at the airport and return you to our Orientation Center for a safety briefing and general country orientation. For this program you are required to complete one week of language training and orientation which is included in the cost of the program. At the end of that week you will transfer to your placement to begin volunteering. Our staff are available to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week should you require help of any kind.

Typical Volunteer: We believe everyone can contribute by volunteering. Recent graduates from high school, college or university, professionals taking a career break, recent retirees, individuals or groups who are interested in a change and the chance to enrich their own life and the lives of others. If you are 18 years or older you can apply for any of the placements available. If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support.
Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
