Teaching the Maasai
Tanzania
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Throughout the year
Description:
Volunteer teach in Tanzania in Maasai schools. Though English is an international language and the second national language of Tanzania there are nonetheless very few Maasai who speak English. The majority of Maasai families do however recognize the importance of their children learning even a little English, but there is a great shortage of English speaking teachers. To fill this gap your own volunteer contribution in teaching English and other subjects such as math and sports would be greatly valued and appreciated.
Highlights:
Please note that Massai projects are only for the most adventurous travelers. Conditions are quite basic. Volunteers working in Maasai Land will stay in a local style mud hut, a typical Maasai abode. At the weekend any culture shock is ameliorated on return back to the relatively civilized world of Arusha, where you can relax and spend your free time exploring the cafes, restaurants, craft stalls and local markets.
