Description:
Broaden your knowledge on Africa's amazing wildlife and learn about conservation management. This 8-week project includes all parts of wildlife conservation from animal research to ecotourism management. The dynamic nature of the schedule will allow volunteers to go on field trips that suddenly arise when something exciting is happening in a nearby reserve. Past volunteers have been involved with rhino relocations and game captures. Daily routine of 8am to about 5pm and some overnight adventure, which include counting large herbivores on foot, fixing holes in fences, alien plant control and soil erosion management Visits to adjoining South African reserves, Amakhala & Addo National parks. Where possible, volunteers will be involved in the local culture by assisting at schools and communities in their projects. You may also have the opportunity to help out at the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary. In the past volunteers have helped to feed the leopards and lions, maintain the enclosures and get involved with the school groups who come on educational visits.
Highlights:
Project Activities: - Assist on a wildlife behaviour & social survey through data collection - Lean tracking and wildlife signs - Bush survival, map reading, camping & orientation skills - Nocturnal game drives & walks - Forest threats (fire) management - Plant & soil erosion management - Learn from a firearms demo from the game reserve staff - Be involved in wildlife game capture and - Carry out a large mammal census

No qualifications are required as all training is given on the placement.
