Amakhala Conservation Project
South Africa
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Runs throughout the year
Description:
Amakhala is a 5000 hectare game reserve in South Africa Game Reserve and is a unique conservation initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area. The challenge is now to re-establish conservation projects where they once roamed freely and so making a contribution to the conservation of our natural heritage. Volunteers will assist in monitoring and managing wildlife within the reserve. Involvement will include tracking lions and other animals with a telemetry device. This is valuable fieldwork for the Amakhala conservation centre's ongoing research on animal behaviour. They will also have the opportunity to pay a visit to the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary and gain so real up close and personnel time with the wildlife. The volunteer accommodation is extremely comfortable and based off the reserve in Paterson. It is a large house, with fully furnished ensuite bedrooms, as well as a lounge, dinning area available. All meals are provided and the house has Satellite TV, telephone and Internet access.
