Nepal Health & Medical - Shanti Sewa Griha Clinics

  Nepal
  • Kathmandu:
  • Kathmandu

Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year rounds, departures at the beginning of each month

Description: Shanti Sewa Griha only has one full time doctor who travels to both centres (Gaushala & Budhanilkantha) and a few nurses. They could certainly use a little assistance from a medical professional. Volunteers may even be able to assist with mobile community clinics and health promotion etc.

The clinic has over 100 inpatient beds with 16 professional staff. The home/hospice cares for over 600 people. The disabled children's center has 30 beds with 4 staff. Approximately 12 children are cared for by 3 staff at the malnutrition center.

Highlights: Some specific tasks for a volunteer would be to assist the doctor and nurses in clinic/hospital/terminal care center at the larger Gaushala clinic. Also assisting the doctor and nurses in the smaller clinic in Budhanilkantha.

You could help in the malnutrition center and assist with health & hygiene and nutrtion education, and also assist nurses with the disabled children's center.

There could also be opportunities to work in administration as well, as all organizations can benefit from funding proposals etc. There is also always opportunity to teach English to staff and help with general childcare etc.

Qualifications: This placement is looking for volunteers with experience in the medical profession, Doctors & Nurses would be best. Experience working with the disabled can also be sufficient. Med-Students and possibly Pre-MedStudents might be accepted as long as there is enough experience and knowledge of first-aid, health & hygiene, nutition.

The more experience and certification, the more a volunteer will be able to assist. In addition the volunteer must have a good heart and genuine interest in helping. Anyone who discriminates against anyone, is worried about disease and is scared of touching children or sick people would not be comfortable here.
