  • Kathmandu

Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year round, departures at the beginning of each month

Description: The NCO Shiphan Home's provides a safe and caring environment for the rescued children of prisoners, offers education, medical care when required, helps to maintain family contact whenever possible, and offer opportunities for skill development training and a sense of responsibility in the older children. Like the other NCO homes, they are always understaffed and lack resources to make these goals attainable. Volunteers can help to transfer their skills to staff as well as work directly with the children.

Highlights:
* This home deals with more sensitive issues with children who have been rescued from prison and whose families are still in custody. Working with the children to help improve their self confidence, and counseling is very important here.
* Organizing activities such as sports, playing educational games, helping with homework and tutoring. Teaching basic personal health & hygiene and nutrition.
* Taking children on field trips and picnics. Somtimes taking the children to prison to visit their families.
* Developing new programs depending on volunteers skills, like yoga, sewing, knitting, cooking, music, arts and crafts etc.
* Assistance is needed in administration, but mainly for longer term more experienced volunteers.
* Organize fundraising programs and events.
* There is potential to work in NCO's Bal Mandir home on the side.

Qualifications: Someone who loves and has experience with children of all ages. Self-sufficiency and self-motivation are important here.

Other skills or training that may be of use: Nutritionist, Standard First Aid, Health and Hygiene Training, Child and Youth Worker (Certified), Early Childhood Education, Day Care Work, Psychology (Student), Social Worker, Educational Games.
