Description: Despite criminalization, the trade in human lives is increasing at an alarming rate. Today there is preliminary data showing between 5000 - 7000 girls between the ages of 10-20 are trafficked every single year! An estimated 200,000 girls are working as prostitutes in Indian cities and the numbers are rising.

This is an enormous problem, and ABC can use volunteers in a variety of different ways to try to improve the lives of these women and children.

Highlights: Depending on the background and skill of the volunteers, jobs range from office assistance/computer training and work with staff, website maintenance, program proposals and funding development.

If a volunteer has a background in psychology/counseling they will have an opportunity to work directly with the target group. If they have a medical background they may be able to assist in one of the small community clinics, and if they have an agricultural/handicrafts background, that will be utilized too. Because of the broad spectrum of work that ABC does it is difficult to be specific.

Other potential side jobs could include training and development of staff and Nepali volunteers. The women who work at ABC are highly interested in learning from the volunteer. English of course, but computers, and even just cultural and general information. The more you bring to the table at ABC, the more you will be able to do.

Qualifications: You need to have good communication skills here. Both written and spoken. You also cannot be shy. Volunteers will not always have supervision, and may need to be able to ask questions and be self motivated.

Volunteers must be sensitive to the situation and the women and children they will work with. These people have been through a lot, and even one wrong question from an insensitive volunteer can cause a lot of problems.

Typical Volunteer: We believe everyone can contribute by volunteering. Recent graduates from high school, college or university, professionals taking a career break, recent retirees, individuals or groups who are interested in a change and the chance to enrich their own life and the lives of others. If you are 18 years or older you can apply for any of the placements available. If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support. Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
