Nepal Health & Medical Placement - Siddhi Memorial Hospital
Nepal
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year round, departures at beginning of each month
Description:
The Siddhi Memorial Foundation has a lot of passion and vision, but lacks the experience and organization and skills that many foreign volunteers can provide. Siddhi Memorial Hospital specifically needs help in hospital administration and management. Assistance with developing better sustainability and fundraising is also imperative. Although SMH would be happy to receive doctors and nurses especially with specialization in pediatrics and gynaecology they are actually quite well staffed in this area. A specialized doctor could certainly help to train the local staff and help with health promotion. There is some opportunity to work with patients directly, especially if the hospital is very busy, but it is not the greatest need.
Highlights:
Anyone with experience planning and managing health promotion camps and mobile clinics could be very helpful. The work would involve raising the funds, and working with the local community and staff to run the clinics. Possible research could be involved after clinic completion.
Qualifications:
You must be flexible and patient to work in any Nepalese setting. Festivals and strikes constantly disrupt the work day, and things just don't happen very efficiently. You also must be self motivated and capable of thinking for yourself, proposing your ideas and making suggestions. The SMH needs someone to help them take ideas and make them happen. Anyone who can not wait or who is frustrated by people being late is not reccommended for this placement. Unfortunately this is just a reality that you must learn to live and work with.
