Description:
Shanti Sewa operates their own pre-school and kindergarten in the larger Gaushala center and the Shanti Primary School at the Budhanilkantha center. These schools follow the Waldorf education system. Like many NGO's funds and staffing are always on short supply. The teachers they do have, are well trained and educated, but they can always use teacher's assistants and native English speakers to help in the classroom. The actual 'Shanti School' has 6 teachers educating 86 children up to the 6th grade. There are 55 children under the age of 3 in the nurseries with 4 staff and 43 children between 3 and 6 years of age cared for by another 4 staff. The vocational training workshop has about 400 previous patients working away, and there are about 150 people working in the organic vegetable gardens.
Highlights:
Some specific tasks for volunteers would be teaching English classes to both the children and staff in English, or assisting in teaching Math, Computers, Physical Education and any other subjects. Also, organizing activities and recreation with the children and helping with Arts & Crafts and music. Other potential side jobs could include Health & Hygiene and Nutrition education or helping the staff to develop new projects and activities.
Qualifications:
The placement would be good for someone with a good heart and a genuine interest in helping others. Some skills or training that could be of good use would be: Early Childhood Education, Day Care Work, Social Work, Standard First Aid, Health & Hygiene Training, Teaching various subjects, Educational games.

Recent graduates from high school, college or university, professionals taking a career break, recent retirees, individuals or groups who are interested in a change and the chance to enrich their own life and the lives of others. If you are 18 years or older you can apply for any of the placements available. If you are from 16-18 years old you may apply for placements near our Volunteer Abroad Office and Residence, so that we are able to give you more support. Both students and professionals are needed for placements in all our countries.
