Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Through out the year
Description:
Project Brief You will be helping to coach in an academy for Rugby and Football in Pune. The academy trains both boys and girls, from 5 years upwards. Their aim is to provide the players a chance to achieve their potential and in doing so enable the player to play at the highest possible level. While the academy operates all year round, there is normally a lull in attendance during the exam period (February to May). About the Project This non-profit organization coaches football and rugby to around 130 children and young people between the age of 6 and 21. Coaching takes place every evening from 4:30pm to 7:00pm on the spacious grounds of a local law college. Training is divided into four different squads: a kid's squad, separate boys' and girls' squads, and a senior team (aged 15+) who play in the local football league. The focus of the training is on individual development, helping each player to become the best he or she can be. Children come from a variety of backgrounds, and now they are looking at ways to offer top quality training to some of the city's poorest children. Your Role You will be working alongside the existing coaching staff and volunteers giving your support in this busy environment. You could help coach rugby, football, or both, depending on where your skills lie. Training takes place every afternoon for 2 and a half hours, and that includes weekends, but you will be able to take a few days off during your placement should you wish to do some travelling. There may also be the opportunity to travel to far-flung parts of India with the team for various tournaments and competitions. The city of Pune itself is at some altitude and so is not as hot as most parts of India. By the late afternoon, when training takes place, it is usually cool enough to run around so you shouldn't have to worry about getting sunstroke!
