Community Work in the Deprived Areas of Jaipur
India
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Multiple start dates year round
Description:
Do you want to help the people that need it most? Jaipur is a riot of colour and design, dripping with the diversity that makes up modern India. To an extent though, its beauty is skin deep, with chronic poverty afflicting some of the worst slums in the country. This is a chance to make a real difference to people at the bottom of Indian society; people who could really do with a break. Given the scale of the problems here, the NGO you'll be working with has an understandably broad focus, concentrating on improving levels of education, health, empowerment and training. You'll be well prepared for the trip as we include our TEFL certification in the price of the project to give you got the best possible chance to make a lasting difference. Find out more about i-to-i, watch their short video here: http://video.i-to-i.com/site-videos/video.html
Highlights:
What were the highlights of your trip that you couldn't wait to tell your friends about? "Riding camels in Pushkar with a group of Mexicans, wading through flooded roads to see the Taj Mahal, attending an India wedding, living on my own with a lovely Indian family, sharing a park bench with a monkey, exploring Udaipur, whitewashing a classroom and getting covered in paint, making animal masks with a class of kids." (Beth Tynegate) You could brighten the futures of India's most desperate residents while reveling in the 'Pink City' of Jaipur in the stunning desert state of Rajasthan. It's a bittersweet irony that one of the worlds most beautiful destinations has a darker side; it contains some of the most impoverished slums in India. You'll play a vital role working with this well-established NGO, which is making a vital difference to those at the bottom of society's ladder. Helping at a number of projects, ranging from self-help groups to teaching English to local children, you'll alleviate the problems many Indians face. There is so much to do to help improve the lives of people living in India's slums. The quality of life is low, education is almost nonexistent, and people do not know how to help themselves. Volunteers are needed to help the NGO in the work that they do and to provide a helping hand in all areas. You could get involved in many different areas such as teaching, training, organizing camps, improving the environment, health and hygiene, working with self-help groups, vocational training and playing games with children.
