Nepal Social Placement - Shanti Sewa Griha: Gaushala
Nepal
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year round, departures at the beginning of each month
Description:
Shanti Sewa Griha needs volunteers to help in areas where their local staff do not have education or expertise. Most of their staff were once patients, so they may lack skills and education. Like many NGO's funding and staffing can be difficult. Volunteers can help take off some of the pressure. The clinic has over 100 inpatient beds with 16 staff. The home/hospice cares for over 600 people. The disabled children's center has 30 beds with 4 staff. There are 55 children under the age of 3 in the nurseries with 4 staff and 43 children between 3 and 6 years of age cared for by another 4 staff. The vocational training workshop has about 400 previous patients working away.
Highlights:
At the larger Gaushala home there are many areas where they need assistance: - Play and arrange activities with the youngest children in the nusery and kindergarten. - Teach the staff in English and Computers. - Help to make handicrafts, develop new products and assist and teach furniture building in their large rehabilitation center (they specifically need help starting up a paper making program).
Qualifications:
The placement would be good for someone with a good heart and a genuine interest in helping others. Some skills or training that would be of good use would be: Early Childhood Education, Leadership Programming, Recreational Programming, Social Work (MSW or Student), Day Care Work, General Administration, Nutritionist, Emergency Medical Technician, Standard First Aid, Natural Medicine, Public Health, Educational Games.
