Teaching English in Community School-Nepal
Nepal
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: The programme starts on the 1st and 15th day of each month. (Year-Round)
Description:
Nepal has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most beautiful countries in the world; however, it is still a developing country where more than 40% of the total population lives below the most basic poverty line. Thousands of children are deprived of educational opportunities in Nepal because of many social issues and the lack of schooling opportunities. In this program volunteers are placed in Government, community & Simi Private or boarding schools to teach English to Nepali children. We encourage volunteers to work in partnership with Nepali teachers to introduce new practical teaching methods to the classroom. Volunteers also work individually with their own classes as the sole teacher. Volunteers provide conversational English and reading classes to children during school and non-school hours. English skills amongst the children will vary due to age and school placement. We encourage volunteers to come equipped to teach songs, dances, and other activities, which will promote increased vocabulary among the students regardless of their initial ability. It is our goal to ensure that the children of Nepal are able to advance their practical English language skills, both written and verbal, to ensure their success in the future. In Nepal, English is becoming more and more of a required skill for job placement and educational advancement. You may find Nepali schools very different to your own past experience. Schools in Nepal are often lacking in funding and resources. Class size can range from 10 to 50 students. School runs from Sunday to Friday with Saturday off. There are frequent holidays and festivals when schools are closed. Students are between 5 and 16 years of age. You will usually teach 3 to 5 hours a day, however you may wish to make additional contributions to the program. To teach English at a Nepali school you don't need any formal teaching qualifications. You will need a good command of written and spoken English, plenty of enthusiasm and a lot of patience. Please note that festivals and exams disrupt the teaching schedule at the following times: March/April, September/November. We suggest that you have a second choice of program during these times. *On your own initiative you can also arrange extra tuition for children or women's groups outside of school hours. You are encouraged to build relationships with teachers and share knowledge.
