Rewarding and Challenging Work with Orphaned Pre-School Children in Ghana

  Ghana
  • Accra:
  • Accra

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Throughout the Year

Description: You'll be involved in a variety of activities, such as playtime, feeding, basic teaching, helping children from a mixture of social backgrounds, aged between 1 to 5 year to learn basic numerical and English skills, drawing, painting, music and also facilitating games.

Your help will go a long way to giving the children a better start in life, assisting with day-to-day care, teaching and social interaction as well as providing a safe environment for the children to be in.

The school desperately need volunteers to look after these children. You dont need to be qualified to take part on this project, just a big heart and a desire to provide care and support. This is a very worthwhile and beneficial placement - truly a unique opportunity to make a difference!!

WHAT YOU'LL GET FROM DOING THIS PLACEMENT:
** An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into African culture.
** The immense satisfaction of knowing that you've helped underprivileged children and helped to give them a better start in life.
** You'll learn a lot from experts in your field about how they work in a cultural environment that's different to what you're used to.
** New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
** An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
** And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

Travellers makes donations to most of our poorer schools (and also some that we don't work directly with). Sometimes we sponsor the children's education by paying their school fees, or we provide money directly to the school. We also buy necessities, such as food, books, uniforms, computers and other teaching aids for the kids.

Rewarding and Challenging Work with Orphaned Pre-School Children in Ghana

Highlights: AKWAABA! Welcome to Ghana. This country is unique and rich in African culture that is all their own. Their very distinctive and colourful Kente cloth is famous around the world and their food is an experience - you absolutely must eat lunch in the street bought from a kiosk or food cart.

Ghanaian time is equally famous. When someone says, "See you at 10.a.m.," - what he really means is, "I'll see you sometime tomorrow"! And then he may not turn up at all. The pace of life is slower and more relaxed. You'll quickly get involved in the daily life of the local people and pretty soon you'll feel completely at home - Ghana has that effect on you!

OTHER PROJECTS AVAILABLE IN GHANA:
You can also do Teaching Sports, Work Experience or Internships, Care with a Street Girls Aid Project, or take part in the Annual Travellers Summer Fun Camp for the children in the holidays. You can also combine any two or three of these projects to give you an even wider and more diverse experience of your time in Ghana.

"Walking to Sambel is probably one of the most amazing things ever! You walk up from the house on Mosuku Road and people from everywhere are shouting out "Obruni" but you just give them a smile, ask them how they are and they feel respected. I mean, at home, people wouldn't give you a second look but you don't mind the curiosity of the kids, who come rushing to your feet and grab at your arms and just continuously tug or pinch your skin... you truly feel as though you are doing something fantastic for the kids we have taught." Jonathan Childs, Travellers Volunteer.
