Work for Orphans/Street Children in Bolivia

  Bolivia
    Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: all year round

Description: The children's home shelters 12 houses and most of them are for boys. There is only one house for the girls and one for babies from newly born to 6 year olds and there are about 140 babies at the moment. The home also has a school for all the children. The boy's houses shelters about 300 boys, separated by their age group. Most of the boys are brought from the streets and have problems of drugs addiction, alcohol, etc. The educators of the house work mainly on advising and motivating those boys in order to get them out of their addiction. There is one house for young boys between the ages of 16-18 years. These boys work during the day and study at night. The home also has a house for girls and women from streets. There are about 80 girls in the house at present and there is no age bar. Some of the girls have children so there is a nursery as well. There is an institute for boys, where they learn carpentry, mechanic, bakery and building.

Volunteers in Bolivia working for Children's Home will help the children to learn English and also assist them with their homework. Volunteers are free to organize any extra activities such as workshops, handicrafts, etc. Usually about 15 foreign volunteers work in this home with one volunteer supervising the group.

Volunteers could also get involved in more specialized activities, like music, baking or carpentry, or could teach English, sports, math and other subjects in school. Volunteers work for about 5 hours a day. Volunteers can also participate in the special activities organized during the weekends. The project has magazines, textbooks, and audio equipments.
