Community Work and Tourism on Brazil's Coast (Salvador)
Brazil
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: multiple start dates available year round
Description:
As an international volunteer, you will be in a perfect position to assist with "Project Tourism and Social Responsibility." Based in Salvador and its metropolitan area, the project works with youngsters from low-income families who are keen to work in the area's tourism industry. Volunteers may find themselves involved in a diverse range of activities including making speeches, providing classroom assistance, supporting the IT training laboratory, planning and executing promotional campaigns, and accompanying and supporting financial and administrative activities. You should expect your time at this project to be varied and to be involved in many different activities. Aside from supporting classroom activities, you will also help organize and join the youth in extra class and team activities, and help the instructors to create teaching materials. The aim of this project is to help teenagers and young people from poor communities to prepare for employment. All of the youngsters taking part in this project have shown better results at school, and have also improved their family relations and social behaviour. Our project also encompasses community development supporting youngsters who are HIV positive.
Highlights:
This is your chance to get to grips with tourism in the beautiful coastal area of Salvador where the sun (almost) always shines! As an international volunteer you will be in a perfect position to assist with a unique project which works with youngsters from low-income families, helping them find a way into a brighter and better future in their own home. Salvador is on the east coast of Brazil in the state of Bahia. It has a unique and vibrant culture based around its African roots which is reflected in its music, dance and religion. The historic centre boasts ornate churches and cobbled streets. There are fantastic beaches within 45 minutes of the city centre and relaxed islands off the coast.
Qualifications:
It is vital that you approach this project with a professional attitude, in order to set an example to the teenagers and young adults. Some professional experience in the tourism industry would be a great advantage, although not essential, providing you can demonstrate at least awareness and a serious interest in the industry. We recommend that you learn as much Portuguese and Spanish as possible prior to your placement.
