Preserving the dune landscape of the North Sea island of Wangerooge

Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Description:
Your exhausting working day ends with a refreshing swim in the North Sea. Afterwards, you bask in the sun and proudly look at the beach: together with your fellow volunteers, you have again saved a good part of those dunes from erosion by wind and waves! If you like the idea of helping to preserve the dune landscape of this eastern-most East Frisian island, you have come to the right workcamp. Wangerooge has several nature reserves and bird sanctuaries and is a car-free zone. International volunteer groups have worked in coastal and duneland protection on this North Sea island for over 50 years. The international group will erect sand-retaining fences, plant marram grass and repair footpaths in the dunes. All these jobs prevent erosion of the dunes by wind and water, and are part of the island's 3 sea defences. The dunes are a nature reserve and offer a habitat for coastal animal and plant life. This is a project for people who love the sea, the beach, the sun and the wind. Apart from the practical island protection work, you will have the opportunity to learn about the unique mud-flats habitat and take part in excursions to get to know this area.
