China
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Description:
Volunteers in this program will have the rare opportunity to work at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda located in the Wolong Nature Reserve with Giant Panda Bears as well as other animals including China's golden monkey and red panda. Volunteers will participate in cleaning the panda house and surroundings, preparing food, feeding pandas, and helping with research studies. The center is located at the base of the picturesque Wolong Mountains. The center is dedicated to preserving animals, specifically the Giant Panda. In order to learn how to save the Panda from extinction researchers spend long hours researching panda behavior and bamboo ecology. The center then shares their research with other research centers in China and across the world in the hope that this research will improve the lives of Pandas across the world. The center is predominantly a non-profit organization but also receives funding from the Chinese Government, wildlife organizations across the world and individuals. The Giant Panda Bear is one of the most critically endangered species in the world. It is estimated that there are only about 1,600 remaining in the world.
