  • All Other Areas in Peru:
  • Trujillo

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: multiple start dates year round

Description: Peru is clearly a greedy country; an array of spectacular beaches on its long Pacific coast, world class trekking in the Andes, gloriously thick jungles as well as an ancient civilisation or two make it top of most peoples South American to do list. Based on the coast, Trujillo is home to most of the above; a lovely coastal resort a stones throw from the Andes and full of the spirit of Peru's past. Half your time here though, will be spent with Peru's future. Our two partner projects here work with abandoned or at risk children and those with mental illnesses. Your day will be varied and duties include physical therapy, playing sports and organising English workshops.

*Project details:
Trujillo is the third largest city in Peru, and is well known for its attractive colonial architecture. It is also home to splendid pre-Incan archaeological sites and also the extravagantly named Pyramids of the Temples of the Sun and Moon, which date back about 1500 years.

We work with two very worthwhile projects. The Hogar de Nina cares for abandoned or at risk children, and the Centro Educativo Carlos A. Mannucci looks after kids/adults with mental disabilities like Down's Syndrome, autism and deafness.

The Centro Educativa Carlos A. Mannucci was founded 44 years ago as a charity, and around 20 years later the centre received recognition as a public school, and nowadays it is partly financed by the government and partly by the parents, through tuition fees.

The Hogar de Nina was founded in 1947 and presently houses about 70 children and teenagers who have been abandoned or who are at risk. In this home the girls receive shelter, food, education, health care and attention.

We also have the opportunity to combine working in one of these centres with teaching in a local school also based in Trujillo. Antonio Torres Araujo school is both a primary and secondary school and have the need for English teachers

*Why the project needs volunteers:
All projects lack funds in order to hire staff and buy resources so volunteers play an important role in brightening and improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable Peruvians imaginable.
