Internships in Tanzania
Tanzania
Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Throughout the year. Programs start most months.
Description:
Community Training Internship The Community Training Internship is designed for individuals who are specifically interested in working with community groups and would like to dedicate at least nine full weeks (or more) to conducting community training and program monitoring and evaluation (M&E). Community Training Interns may choose to focus on either HIV/AIDS prevention and care or Sustainable Agriculture. By the end of the internship, Community Training Interns will have gained valuable training experience in their chosen field, as well as monitoring and evaluation skills. This internship is ideal for student volunteers looking to gain academic credit or to fulfill university internship or service requirements. Academic credit can be arranged through SUNY-Albany or through your own college or university. In addition to your training responsibilities, as a Community Training Intern you will conduct critical monitoring and evaluation research with community groups to help assess the effectiveness of GSCs community training. Your M&E responsibilities will consist of collecting and processing data from community groups trained, including trainee numbers, age, gender, and pre and post test indicators. Community Training Interns are also encouraged (although not required) to take on an additional volunteer project in their extra time. Interns will have the opportunity to work with a local orphanage and, when appropriate, assist GSCs Community Development Interns with on-going development projects with local organizations. Community Training Interns will receive a small project stipend to devote to their M&E work or to their additional volunteer project. Community Development Internship The Community Development Internship is designed for individuals who are specifically interested in International Development and gaining first-hand experience working with specific community development projects. After completing the four-week Short-Term Project Community Training Program in either HIV/AIDS or Sustainable Agriculture, CDI volunteers devote the remaining five weeks (or more) of their internship to exploring the intricacies of international development by assisting in the development of one of GSCs sustainable community development or partnership projects. CDI development projects for HIV/AIDS interns include assisting GSC in-country staff in program development, supporting GSCs Peer Education Health Clubs with H/A training and materials, working with the local organization Women In Action (WIA), and working with local orphanages. CDI development projects for Sustainable Agriculture interns include improving and expanding GSCs agricultural demo plot, working with local farm groups on their own demo plots, and working with GSCs Peer Education Health Clubs to develop gardens. Contact GSC for more information about CDI project options. International Health Internship The International Health Internship is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in health, especially those interested in International or Public Health. After completing the four-week Short-Term Project Community Training Program focusing on HIV/AIDS, the following five weeks will be devoted to shadowing medical staff at local healthcare facilities in the mornings and pursuing an additional community development project in the afternoons. Interns will be able to choose from several community development project options, including working with a local orphanage and, when appropriate, assisting GSCs Community Development Interns with on-going development projects. A small project support stipend will be dedicated to each International Health Intern and their assigned hospital or clinic. AIDS and Sustainable Agriculture Integrated Internship Designed for individuals with multiple programmatic interests, the AIDS and Agriculture Integrated Internship allows individual volunteers to participate in both the HIV/AIDS and Sustainable Agriculture Short-Term Programs offered in Tanzania. The Integrated Internship requires a nine-week minimum commitment from volunteers to allow for effective volunteer orientation and training within each discipline. Integrated Internship Nine-Week Option 1: Three to six weeks of community training in HIV/AIDS prevention and care, followed by three to six weeks (minimum) of community training in Sustainable Agriculture. Integrated Internship Nine-Week Option 2: Three to six weeks of community training in Sustainable Agriculture, followed by three to six weeks (minimum) of community training in HIV/AIDS prevention and care. (Please note that the length of the Integrated Internship program components may vary depending on program start dates. Please contact GSC for more information about other nine-week and long-term integrated internship options and start dates.) Occasionally, depending on the size and location of the community groups you are training, Integrated Interns with extra time in the afternoons and weekends will have the opportunity to volunteer at one of the local orphanages affiliated with GSC and potentially, when appropriate, assist GSCs Community Development Interns with on-going development projects. Integrated Internship Participants will spend the first week of their program living in a comfortable local hostel. The following eight weeks or longer will be spent living with a local Tanzanian host family.
Highlights:
Host Families Participating in an international homestay is one of the best ways to learn about another language and culture. Every GSC program offers a homestay with a local Tanzanian host. GSC places volunteers with hosts that enjoy learning about other cultures and appreciate the unique opportunity that hosting an international volunteer gives to their family life. Thailand volunteers also have the option of staying at the volunteer center throughout the duration of their stay. Orientation & Training An orientation in Arusha is conducted for all Tanzania participants. This includes pick-up at the Kilimanjaro Airport and four to five nights accommodation at the Catholic Centre House Hostel in central Arusha with fellow participants. During the first week, participants are encouraged to walk about the town to get a flavor of this tourist town, the entryway into Tanzania's world-famous northern tourist routes. Participants are accompanied by GSC staff and counterparts for group meals to get accustomed to some of the international and local cuisine. The first week orientation emphasizes specific training on cultural, health, and safety issues specific to the day to day realities of Tanzania, Swahili language lessons, as well as an introduction to various GSC projects. The HIV/AIDS Prevention Program includes training on HIV/AIDS in a Tanzania specific context and includes training tips on how to conduct rural training. This training covers the biology of the virus and disease, cultural factors that influence its spread and transmission in Tanzania, methods of prevention, testing, and treatment. The Sustainable Agriculture Program provides training on HIV/AIDS issues as mentioned above, in addition to nutrition, and bio-intensive agriculture (BIA). Topics covered in BIA training are double digging, composting, and companion planting. On either the first or second weekend, a trip to one of Tanzania's renowned game parks is arranged through a local tour operator, availing for participants a taste of the unsurpassed geographic features of this region.
