Volunteer Teaching in Ghana
Ghana
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Project runs all year round
Description:
Volunteers who join this programme will have the chance to live and work in a coastal community in the Central region of Ghana in West Africa. GVI has teamed up with the Sabre Charitable Trust to offer much needed support to some of Ghana's rural communities. During this placement you will be living in a small community run guesthouse, just a few minutes walk from the school and one of Ghana's most stunning beaches, while teaching the local kindergarten and primary schoolchildren. All your food and accommodation is included in the fee, as well as your transfer to the project site and your project induction. During your time in Ghana you will have a chance to explore perhaps a guided tour of Elmina Castle, a visit to Elmina town or a visit to Kakum National Park where you can take a journey through the rainforest on a canopy walkway. Ghana's coastline is dotted with the remnants of over 15 slave trading castles, from where many thousands of Ghanaians were shipped to slavery in North America. Both Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, just a short journey from Brenu Beach, have been restored to their original state and are well worth a visit.
Qualifications:
No formal teacher-training is required as each Volunteer will be supported by the GVI project manager and existing Volunteers, as well as the volunteer coordinator, a formal local teacher. However, if you have any experience of teaching or working with children then you will find it of great benefit. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, happy to work with children and prepared to teach in basic conditions.
