Description: Come to historic Cambodia to teach English to eager language students!

Due to a turbulent past and years of devastation, much of Cambodia's population haven't had the opportunity to receive a formal education. However, now that peace has been restored, the schools have re-opened for all to attend. A national curriculum was introduced in 2005, but due to the lack of text books, few teachers, low salaries, and overcrowding, there are many improvements that still need to be made.

With such poor conditions in schools, many bright children are unable to thrive as they should because they simply don't get the attention they need. Due to external factors such as poverty and illness, many children are unable to attend school full time.

Teaching English with Projects Abroad in Cambodia, you'll be given the chance to help these children overcome the restrictions imposed on them by the poverty of their beautiful nation and the infancy of its education system. You'll teach free tuition classes in orphanages and in small community schools. This provides children with the specialized attention they need to get their education off the ground as an additional supplement to the few hours of public schooling they receive everyday. Your classes will normally be taught within a formal system with a timetable and small class sizes (10-20), enabling you to give plenty of personal attention to each student.

The ability to speak English will help pupils to improve their future career prospects. You will help the younger children grasp the basics while helping the older students advance their studies. The time and effort you put in will ensure that they gain confidence in their English language skills. All our placements are based in and around the bustling capital city, Phnom Penh, where you will teach pupils ranging in age from 7-16.

There are also opportunities for volunteers to get involved with teaching other subjects, especially music and dance, since a number of orphanages and schools support themselves by putting on traditional dance shows.

Teach English in Cambodia with Projects Abroad

Highlights: The capital city of Cambodia is Phnom Penh, a vibrant and fascinating city that is located in the southern part of the country. Cambodia's total area is 69,898 sq. miles (181,035 sq. km), and the population has reached 14 million people. Besides the capital city, Cambodia boasts many attractions that include beautiful beaches, an exotic jungle to explore and the world famous gathering of temples in Angkor, all well worth a visit.

Our volunteers in Cambodia live in shared apartments rented by Projects Abroad. The apartments are modern, bright, and clean, and can hold about 10 volunteers at a time. One apartment is in the North of the city, in the same building as the local Projects Abroad office, and one is in the South. Volunteers will be placed according to where their placements are located to allow for the easiest commute.

In addition, become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
