Rhino Conservation Project in Uganda

  Uganda
    Kampala

Dates: Visit our website for upcoming start dates

Description: In the past there were two species of rhino which used to roam the savannahs and woodlands of Uganda, but both have sadly vanished. Rhino Fund Uganda, with the help of GVI volunteers, hopes to reverse this situation and return these magnificent animals back to Uganda. By joining this volunteering project in Uganda, you can be involved in introducing rhinos into the Ziwa Wildlife Sanctuary. As a volunteer on this project you will be involved in a variety of different tasks, including helping with community education and awareness activities, as well as with management and maintenance of the reserve. You may also be involved in the re-introduction of other species occasionally, including buffalo, giraffe, impala, wildebeest and zebra.

* How this program makes a difference:

The rhino is gone from Uganda, wiped out by war and the harsh economic conditions that led poachers to hunt it and sell the horn. GVI, in conjunction with local project partners, is involved in their reintroduction to Uganda. By creating greater stability in protected areas, community leaders have created a sanctuary for the breeding of Southern White Rhino and other more common species of game.
