Description:
Learn Spanish and teach indigenous children in stunning south-western Peru around the Colca Canyon, where the desert meets the foothills of the Peruvian Andes. Run in conjunction with leaders and teachers of the communities, you will assist with the education of children and adults who otherwise may not have the opportunity of a full formal education or who need educational reinforcement. GVI volunteers also assist the understaffed schools in the region. Volunteers are given food and accommodation with a local family based in the colonial town of Arequipa and transported daily to the communities. Weekend adventure activities are included such as a 3-day trip to the Colca Canyon, mountain biking and horse-back riding.
Highlights:
Make a difference to the lives of some of Peru's poorest people, immerse yourself in the language, culture and way of life by living with a host family. The project fee includes all food and accommodation, 40 hours Spanish, training, a 1-year scholarship for a child, and $100 to be allocated as you choose. A free 3 day adventure trip gives you the opportunity to enjoy what the country has to offer.
Qualifications:
No formal teacher-training is required as each Volunteer will be supported by the GVI project manager, existing Volunteers, as well as a formal local teacher. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, happy to work with children, prepared to travel daily (included) and to work in basic conditions.
