Promoting girls' rights and HIV/AIDS awareness in Rift Valley province

Dates: June 3 - June 25

Description: The international volunteer project will be held in Kajiado District for 3 weeks. Volunteers will come together to help out in meeting critical needs of the local communities. The main objective of the volunteer project is Income generation. The international volunteer group will be involved in Handicraft activities, Female Genital Mutilation advocacy, and HIV/AIDS outreach program.

The volunteers will help making and selling bead work, advocating for girl child education, and will organize HIV/AIDS awareness activities. The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. Sometimes, depending on the nature of work, the time can be extended.

Project dates:
June 3 - June 25
September 2 - September 24

The project site, Isinya, is located in the Rift Valley province, about 60 km away from Nairobi. The project in June is based in Olturoto, about 7 km from Isinya Center. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 7 km away. The September project is based in Isinya town. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 100 metres away.

Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Athi River and Kitengela, 20-30 minutes drive from the camp sites.

There is an extra fee of 250 Euros for participation in this project, intended to support the local hosting organization.

Promoting girls' rights and HIV/AIDS awareness in Rift Valley province

Highlights: Possibilities visits to an Ostrich Farm, Rangers Resort. The visits will be organized during the weekends. There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.

Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (marketing, finance and management, children's rights, counseling, website design) will be used accordingly.
