Educational and Play Activities for Children in Mombasa

Dates: December 16, 2009 - January 7, 2010

Description: The main objective of the volunteer project is Children's Welfare. The project will take place in Mombasa. Volunteers will come together to demonstrate the power of voluntary service in meeting critical needs of the local communities.

The volunteers will be involved in teaching the children English, sciences, math, counseling, playing and cooking for them. The participants will also assist the day-to-day coordination of the Home to ensure efficient operation.

There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.

All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation. From Nairobi the volunteers will travel to the work camp site in Mombasa.
Mombasa is located in the Coast province, about 8 hours drive from Nairobi (500 km). The Home is located in Bamburi, about 20 minutes drive from Mombasa town. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 10 minutes drive. Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Mombasa.

There is an extra fee of 250 Euros for participation in this project, intended to support the local hosting organization.

Educational and Play Activities for Children in Mombasa

Highlights: On the weekends the volunteers can visit Fort Jesus Historical Museum, Bamburi Nature trail, beaches and homes of the children.

Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as counseling and early childhood education) will be used accordingly.
