Costa Rica
- Central Pacific Coast:
Cartago
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Visit our website for upcoming start dates
Description:
Join this GVI volunteer project and teach school children while you explore one of the few remaining indigenous areas of Costa Rica. You will be based in a small town called Cahuita - a gorgeous Caribbean coastal town about four hours away from San Jose. From Cahuita you will travel every morning to your placement in a nearby rural community where you will teach literacy, math and English at local schools. You will teach classes in the mornings until early afternoon, and then help with other teaching activities in the afternoon, such as sports, geography and arts. Open classes are also held in the afternoons, open to both children and adults, these classes concentrate on literacy reinforcement and English. While in Costa Rica you will also have many opportunities to go on a variety adventures to explore the beautiful Caribbean coastline, string of beaches, and surrounding areas. * How this program makes a difference: GVI, along with leaders and teachers of the local communities near Cahuita, are developing educational reinforcement programs or "aulas abiertas" to assist children and adults who otherwise may not have the opportunity of a full formal education. GVI volunteers also help the understaffed schools in the region, where often just two teachers are in charge of teaching seven grades worth of children, including nursery, at the same time.
Highlights:
* Immerse yourself in the local community * Learn Spanish * Teach and work with indigenous children * Explore the local area and Costa Rica * Live with a host family in a tropical beachside village.
