Childcare Volunteering Program in Costa Rica
Costa Rica
- Eastern Lowlands:
Tortuguero
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Visit the GVI website for upcoming start dates.
Description:
The program is set in the small village of San Francisco, amongst breath-taking scenery of waterways, tropical rainforest, Caribbean beaches and surrounded by wildlife. Volunteers plan and run lessons and assist with basic education for under-privileged children and poor families in the stunning area Tortuguero, close to the world famous National Park and turtle nesting beach. Volunteers learn basic Spanish and work with children all ages, predominately with children from ages 5 to 13. Volunteers supply addition resources to an under-resourced school allowing for improved education and opportunity for children in one of poorest areas of Costa Rica. Volunteers may choose to spend a weekend or 2 exploring this amazing region and enjoying its many attractions and activities, including stunning beaches, rainforest canopy tours and white water rafting. How this program makes a difference: The project takes place in a small settlement within a wildlife refuge. The families in this village have access to only the most basic education and the school is under resourced and has no formal physical education program. The school has 2 teachers and 2 classrooms and students attend for 3 hours, either in the morning or the afternoons. Education is key to assisting the community improve its economic situation and this project supplies additional personnel and funding to the school and as a volunteer you will personally allow students to receive additional assistance with their basic education. The project and volunteers supply resources which the under resourced school is not otherwise able to supply.
