Coaching Soccer in Nakuru or Mt. Kenya
Kenya
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: multiple dates year round
Description:
Want to coach soccer abroad? Come to Africa and try your hand (or feet) at soccer coaching at this initiative, which also aims to promote wellbeing, community spirit and AIDS awareness and needs your help. Green Peace and Environment (GPE) have been working with communities across Kenya to promote positive change using various activities, including soccer, to do this. If you enjoy playing the sport and think you can be a great motivator, teacher and friend to the children involved then you could play a really important part in this internship in Kenya.
Highlights:
One of the main goals of soccer coaching is to use sport to target local youth to share information on good living, reduction of the AIDS virus, community well being and prevention of falling into crime or substance abuse. The placement requires volunteers to assist with the local youth teams that are already structured. One team is in Nakuru, where the young men of the slum train and play five evenings a week. This provides a much needed community and social focus for them. The second team is based near Naro Moru, at Mount Kenya, and also provides a focus for this more rural community with few resources. Both teams have had success in local leagues, and hope to continue to improve upon this.
Qualifications:
Enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard are two key requirements for this volunteer position. You should enjoy the outdoors, and be prepared to get involved in any activities required and for some physically hard work. Also, be aware that you will be outside in the sun for most of the day, so bring plenty of sunscreen. You will be required to take part in night patrols as well as work during the day, which can get tiring.
Cost in US$: $1295 for 4 weeks; $175 each additional week
