Teaching English in Kitengela
Kenya
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: multiple dates year round
Description:
The Kitengela area is located 50 kilometers south of Nairobi in the Rift Valley, the most fertile area of Kenya, where endless grassland plains feed antelope, zebra, wildebeests and cheetahs. It is also the heartland of the nomadic Maasai, who live in close harmony with nature and wildlife. In primary schools with about 300 children and 15 teachers, i-to-i volunteers assist permanent teachers in the classroom. You would give conversational English lessons in an interactive style. With initiative, you might take a class on your own. The children would also welcome special activities that you might arrange, like reading lessons, sports, music and extra-curricular activities. Kitengela is a settlement that borders the animal migration paths through Kenya, so you may see zebra and antelopes on your daily ride to work. Weekend visits to nearby villages give you further chances to soak up the Maasai culture. Find out more about i-to-i, watch their short video here: http://video.i-to-i.com/site-videos/video.html
