Teaching English in Kitengela

  Kenya
    Rural

Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: multiple dates year round

Description: The Kitengela area is located 50 kilometers south of Nairobi in the Rift Valley, the most fertile area of Kenya, where endless grassland plains feed antelope, zebra, wildebeests and cheetahs. It is also the heartland of the nomadic Maasai, who live in close harmony with nature and wildlife. In primary schools with about 300 children and 15 teachers, i-to-i volunteers assist permanent teachers in the classroom. You would give conversational English lessons in an interactive style. With initiative, you might take a class on your own. The children would also welcome special activities that you might arrange, like reading lessons, sports, music and extra-curricular activities. Kitengela is a settlement that borders the animal migration paths through Kenya, so you may see zebra and antelopes on your daily ride to work. Weekend visits to nearby villages give you further chances to soak up the Maasai culture.

Teaching English in Kitengela

Highlights: i-to-i TEFL certification is included in the project fee to give you the fundamental skills to teach English abroad.

If you fancy passing on your English skills while spotting rare African wildlife in a breathtaking destination, nows your chance! Throw your teaching skills into action in one of a number of primary schools based in the rural Kitengela area, and teach against a beautiful backdrop as you develop and enrich the lives and futures of adorable local youngsters from the indigenous Maasai culture.

You'll help with all aspects of teaching English; from conversational lessons to reading, sports and music, as you soak up this natural paradise, just 50 kilometres south of the capital of Nairobi within the lush Rift Valley. The area boasts endless grassland plains which feed local antelope, zebra and wildebeests, so have your binoculars at the ready!

Qualifications: An empathy of other cultures is an essential component of this placement. Volunteers should be able to approach their role as an English teacher with an open mind and the flexibility and initiative required of all projects in Kenya. Any extra skills that you can contribute including music, sports or more vocational areas, can be utilised to the advantage of the children.
