Teach English and Make Indonesian Friends! Non-Native Speakers Welcome

  Indonesia
  • All Other Areas:
  • Makassar

Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Any time

Description: Teach English in a friendly and personal setting, while learning about Indonesian culture and making lifelong friends! If you like to travel and interact with people from other countries, this placement is perfect for you.

Our cultural exchange program places English students in Makassar, Indonesia, with good English speakers for conversation sessions. This is a great way to help Indonesian students learn English expressions, vocabulary and speech patterns, all while helping you get to know each other. Activities outside class include city tours and other excursions, where you in turn will learn about Indonesia's fascinating history and culture, see the way Indonesians live, and explore several parts of this beautiful country. Your students will build their English skills by acting as your tour guides.

Highlights: Our classes are based more on informal, friendly conversation than formal grammar lessons. Therefore, it is not necessary for English teachers to have special training or to be native speakers. Our program is open to students from all majors and backgrounds, who are proficient in English and who want internship placements and real-world experience.

You are not required to hold your English lessons in a classroom, and because your teaching obligation is just two hours, twice a week, you have plenty of free time to explore interesting places around the city of Makassar. You also can arrange more tours or trips to interesting places in and around the city of Makassar with your class participants. This way, they will practice their English conversation skills in giving you pointers, tips, and historical and cultural perspectives. This gives you the opportunity to really get to know the area from a local's point of view.

Interns who need more intensive experience in English teaching will be given more opportunities to lead structured teaching programs, and may take on more classes. They can help us in developing our English curriculum and teaching formal programs. This aspect of our program is ideal for non-native speakers who are English majors.
