Kenya
Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Visit our website for upcoming start dates
Description:
This Kenya expedition combines wildlife research with community work. Based in the Shimoni Archipelago, on the coastal border between Tanzania and Kenya, your time will be divided between the island Wasini, the Shimoni village and the satellite camps on the borders of national parks. You will take part in dolphin, turtle, and humpback whale studies, as well as primate research with Angolan Black and White Colobus monkeys in the coastal forest. You will also work on community development projects, teaching English and working on sustainable tourism developments, making this an extraordinarily varied volunteering opportunity. How this program makes a difference: GVI's Kenya expedition makes a difference in three ways; cetacean research, community development and Terrestrial ecology studies. Through environmental education and current wildlife monitoring studies, our work has been building capacity within the communities, assisting locals in developing sustainable tourism practices and protecting cetacean and primate species in the region.
Highlights:
- Live and work alongside local people and fishermen - Learn a variety of marine and terrestrial survey skills - Spend days on the research boats on warm, crystal-clear waters - See turtles, dolphins, whales, manta rays or whale sharks - Study the Angolan black and white Colobus monkey - Visit prime breeding areas for turtles - Explore inland Africa, camping in some of the most renowned national parks - Assist in teaching English to children and adults - Assist in environmental education and awareness programs - Take optional locally taught Swahili language and cooking lessons
