Health Care in India
India
Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Description:
India is a large, densely populated country with a majority of citizens living below the poverty level and without access to the basic necessities of life. Primary health care is one area sorely lacking among impoverished Indians. People die every day because many villages do not have doctors or basic health care facilities such as clinics or hospitals. Volunteers with health care backgrounds can help fill this void by teaching health care tips in informal education centers, schools, or local organizations. Any volunteer interested in joining Global Crossroad's Volunteer Health Care Program must possess health care certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Volunteers without medical credentials are not allowed to work in this program because of the potential risk. Volunteers may also assist doctors and medical staff in the treatment of patients as well as a variety of other duties: - Record keeping - Sanitation - Nutrition - Treatment for minor injuries. - Counseling patients Notice: Placement in the health care sector is challenging; local health centers and hospitals are very concerned about the skills and qualifications of volunteers. We suggest volunteers consider other projects if they do not have strong background or skill in medicine. Available alternatives are Global Crossroad's HIV/AIDS Awareness Program (educational only, with no hands-on treatment of patients), orphanage or teaching placement, or other community development programs.
