Teaching English in South Africa

  South Africa
  • Cape Town:
  • Cape Town (Kaapstad)

Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: 1st and 3rd Monday of each month - all year

Description: South Africa relies on English for business and government, since English is one of the country's official languages. Unfortunately, many South Africans only get the opportunity to learn the language from their fellow South Africans. This South Africa volunteer project aims to change that fact. In the teaching English in South Africa project, volunteers will either lead or assist in a classroom teaching English to middle or high school children. Schools may be private, public, or informal, but in all cases English teaching focuses on conversational English rather than formal grammar. The student age ranges between 11 and 16 years.

Schools are very helpful to the novice teacher (or even to experienced ones!), and provide many resources to help you plan and carry out your school day. Textbooks, teaching guides, and help preparing lesson plans are all available to support you while you teach in South Africa.

Teaching English in South Africa

Highlights: Volunteers in South Africa spend the most time teaching English but you can teach other various subjects such as Math or Science in primary and junior secondary schools as well. You will teach conversational English to students aged 5 -10 in primary schools and 11-16 in junior secondary schools. You can read literature to help improve the low comprehension level and poor pronunciation of students. Volunteers will also be able to provide theoretical and practical assistance and aide the teachers as they interact with the students.

South Africa has 4 academic terms a year: January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December. A minimum commitment of 2 weeks is required to volunteer for the Teaching English in South Africa project

Qualifications: Volunteers interested in teaching in South Africa do not need to have any specific qualifications for the project except fluency in English and love for the children.
