Description:
A popular destination of eco-tourists in Sri Lanka, our elephant orphanages are designed to feed, nurse, and house young elephants lost or abandoned by their mothers. At sanctuaries located near lush forests and idyllic scenery, volunteers work as assistants to 'mahouts' elephant handlers. Tasks in the elephant orphanage include bathing elephants in the river twice each day; mucking out elephant enclosures in the morning; washing and feeding baby elephants; and assisting with possible construction or maintenance projects. Some work, such as the mental stimulation of the elephants, is usually left to the initiative of the volunteers with some assistance supplied by the mahouts.
