Description:
In Thailand Global Crossroad offers amazing conservation projects in three different areas. These conservation programs have been already in place or potential to develop. Volunteers interested in conservation program should provide more details of interest and contact Global Crossroad so that we can organize appropriate programs and the place. Some of the programs are described here. Presently conservation projects are available in the following areas: - Rare species conservation (RSC) - Coral conservation and restoration - Fish and prawn conservation - Conservation projects are seasonal, physical demanding, and background/experience of volunteers in related project is expected. Rare species conservation (RSC): Several indigenous species of animals are under threat. For example, sea or fresh water turtles, fishes, prawns, tigers, elephants, birds and butterflies. Volunteers can work to start the programs on the following species together with local organizations. Volunteers can either simply join and help project staff in these activities e.g. field visits, camping, meetings or workshops, sample collection (if applicable), or can do research or survey while working with local people and their groups to gather information for their thesis/dissertation or reports. Placements could be in zoos, breeding centers or research stations. Coral conservation and restoration: Corals are the forest in the sea which support and provide shelters for thousands of marine animals. The project is currently run in Chonburi by a University in Thailand which uses PVC pipes to grow corals in nursery bed. Previously it was not believed that corals can be grown on PVC pipes. But this project has proved it is possible. It is a unique project where many students from Universities visit and provide help of different kinds. Fish and prawn conservation: There are almost 2,000 native aquatic animal species in Thailand which are very unique and cannot be found anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, some of them are about to be "extinct", some of them are "rare species", several are in "endangered" situation and many of them are under "threat". Various development agencies have several projects throughout the country. There are several reservoirs, rivers and streams, which are the home of several native fishes and prawns. But there are fishermen living near these waster bodies whose families depend on the fish catch. Fishermen always want to catch more and more, as they don't have knowledge about conservation for their future generation. Therefore, over-fishing is always the main problem. In addition, draining of domestic wastewater, run-off water from agricultural land, which contains pesticides or chemicals into the reservoir, other human activities etc. are the other underlying causes behind the threat for native fishes and prawns in the reservoir. Therefore, local agencies are launching various projects and activities including breeding of fish and prawn and stocking their fry or larvae into the reservoirs Global crossroad has already established a relationship with them and volunteers will have opportunities to stay at the station and be involved in these activities. Other rare species include Mekong catfish, Pangasius, etc.
