Work on Public Health Program
Thailand
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
In Thailand, every district has at least one hospital and every sub-district has one public health center to serve the people in the area. Each public health center organizes activities or community visits in its command area (10-15 villages/ communities). These activities are primary health care services (e.g. vaccination, maternity care, child care) and creating awareness or campaigning about disease prevention e.g. mosquito and fly control and balanced diet/nutrition of children and women e.g. Iodine (I) supplements. Depending upon the qualifications and experiences, and the local situations, volunteers will be involved in some of these activities. Some facts/activities - Health centers provide first aid services and assistance to transfer patients to the hospitals if advanced diagnosis and treatment are required - Number of cases (patients) per center ranges from 20-40/day - Number of staff per center is only 2-5 persons (a public health officer and nurses); Global Crossroad places 1-2 volunteers at a time in each center - As most cases are reported before noon, volunteers can teach in schools in the afternoon to meet the minimum working hours during placement - The cases include - pregnancy, accidents (farm or road), injuries, wounds, snakebites, stomachache, headache, gastric, regular vaccination etc. Therefore, volunteers could help washing/disinfection - Stitching/suturing, measuring temperature, blood pressures, first aid activities, and medical sterilization and storage. Volunteers who have medical or nursing background or working experiences are accepted and are advised to apply at least one month before to apply and get approval from the public health ministry. Formal dress (long skirts/trousers and cover-up blouses or shirts) is needed while working in the community.
