Description:
Romania joined the European Union in early 2007, and is one of its poorest members. Animals are an important part of rural life, so any help you can give as a veterinary volunteer is appreciated. While providing an extra pair of hands, volunteers are also privileged to be in a position where they can learn vast amounts from qualified vets. Whether you are a high school student considering a career in veterinary medicine, an undergraduate or on a career break, working as a veterinary volunteer you could get involved in vaccinations, operations, laboratory work, post-mortems, inspections and the routine treatment of livestock, pets and even wild animals. Based in a busy veterinary practice in the city of Brasov, the English-speaking vets will be able to share their knowledge with you. By showing initiative and a willingness to get involved, you will be able to enhance this process and gain some truly valuable work experience, which will ultimately increase your prospects within this highly competitive field. Volunteering on a Veterinary Placement in Romania with Projects Abroad Volunteers work at a veterinary practice which treats a range of different animals. The working day is divided into two. The mornings are reserved for general surgery where locals bring their pets to be treated. During these times you will learn how to handle animals and reassure their owners, and you will observe how a diagnosis takes place and how inoculations are given. In the afternoons the vet goes out to visit farms in the beautiful Transylvanian countryside. Here you will see a very different, traditional style of living, and a different side of the veterinary practice. Farms are often small and the timely diagnosis and treatment of livestock can make a big difference. Some volunteers also work at the zoo in Brasov, which is an exotic and often challenging experience. These voluntary veterinary placements will give you a unique insight into the veterinary practice both in Romania and in general. The vets are eager to get you as involved as possible, and will enjoy teaching you about veterinary practice in their country. Further Voluntary Veterinary Placements in Romania We also have links with the Forestry Department of Brasov County who deal with the local wildlife, whether it be the problem of bears coming into the city or concerns for the welfare of the local wolf population. Please let us know if you would like to spend part of your placement working alongside them. This is a great way to see some of the stunning scenery the area has to offer.
Highlights:
Romania is an amazing country. The Carpathian Mountains covered in pine forests are its spine. The hills and plains of the three historical provinces, Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania emerge from these mountains. The Southern border is defined by the Danube. The Danube Delta, an exotic paradise for birds and fish, lies in the small Romanian province of Dobrogea, which has 150 miles of coast on the Black Sea. The people who live in this country, the Romanians, share their world with Hungarians, Saxons, Gypsies, Turks, Tatars, Armenians, Jews, Russians and Serbs. The Romanians themselves never forget that they are the Latin people of Orient, descendents of the ancient Dacians. All accommodation is organized, paid for, and monitored by Projects Abroad. All project placements are regularly visited and checked. We require high standards of supervision and accommodation, which are verified before you arrive in Moldova. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
