Description:
Sports' coaching has a real positive impact on children. There is the physical and mental benefit that regular exercise provides. There is the fun and the promise. There are also the life skills like communication, team work, confidence, inclusion, and discipline to be gained by players and volunteer coaches alike. Whether you choose soccer, rugby or basketball in Ghana, we can help you make the best of your time. You could be learning more about your sport in the morning and organizing a game in the afternoon, and through well established relationships with local teams and clubs and carefully structured sports programs we are able to assist volunteers regardless of coaching experience. Volunteer Soccer Coaching in Ghana In this pioneering new project, Projects Abroad soccer volunteers receive professional coaching in the techniques of coaching and training a team. Volunteers in Ghana will practice in the mornings with a local soccer team and in the afternoons will work with a youth team, giving them the benefit of your newly acquired coaching knowledge and skills. Please see the schedule below. This project is a fantastic chance to improve your skills and ability while also helping local children to develop their game. If you are good enough, you may even be selected to play for one of the local second division teams! Volunteer Rugby Coaching in Ghana Volunteers in Ghana will have the chance to coach rugby in schools in and around Cape Coast. We are working alongside George Avoola Ladipo, the coach of the Junior National Rugby team, to help develop the sport in all of the Cape Coast Region. George is a qualified coach who is eager to pass on some of his coaching skills and experience to willing volunteers who want to help him bring Rugby to Ghana. Volunteer coaches working on our rugby project in Ghana will shadow George on a daily basis, helping with all elements of coaching within a selection of schools in the area. You will help with fitness training, ball work, skills sessions and explaining the rules to children who are much more familiar with soccer! You also assist with the organization of rugby games between the various schools, and help with the development of a league system. This is a great opportunity for anyone passionate about rugby to get involved in its development in a country where it is in its infancy. You will be able to pass your enthusiasm for Rugby on to a new generation of youngsters and - who knows in a few years time you may even find that you have been coaching members of the first national Ghanaian Rugby team! Volunteer Basketball Coaching in Ghana Basketball has often been forced to take a backseat in Ghana, due to the nations obsession with soccer. In recent years, however, basketball in Ghana has been on the rise. This is especially evident in the capital of Ghana, Accra, where many new courts have been built, increasing peoples curiosity about basketball. You can get involved by volunteering abroad as a basketball coach on one of our sports placements. Projects Abroad works with two basketball clubs based in Accra: the Accra Warriors and the Accra Flames. Each has a junior team running alongside an established senior team, with the childrens ages ranging from 10 18 years old. Basketball teams in Ghana practice from Monday through Friday with games mainly being arranged on Saturday mornings. Like other sports in Ghana, basketball practice is usually left until later in the afternoon once the heat has died down. To coach basketball in Ghana you do not need to have coaching experience, just a good understanding of the game and an enthusiasm to get involved. This placements is also available as a two-week summer special for high school students between the ages of 16 and 19.
Highlights:
The Ghanaian people, in general, are the friendliest you will meet. They pride themselves as being the friendliest in Africa, sometimes in the world! In order to appreciate the sincere friendliness of them please make every effort to instigate conversations with your host family and workmates. Only by doing this will you really learn and therefore appreciate the Ghanaian culture. For your accommodation, you'll live with a host-family. All the families involved are extremely supportive of Projects Abroad and are eager to experience an inter-cultural exchange so they can learn more about the lives of volunteers. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
