Description:
Artists-in-Residence: Fine arts, theater, music and dance will each be emphasized in our academies. Guitar playing is extremely popular in North Sulawesi and is featured in most church services there; it is the most popular of all student instruments. We plan to have a strong arts component, with artists from around the world working with both children and older adults. For example, a visiting Japanese artist could create a stone garden, or a Dutch artist-in-residence could build a modern sculpture representing the intersection of cultures and ages found on our campuses. Artists will be chosen from around the world, but also from Indonesia, Haiti and Guyana. Indonesian art is starting to be collected with enthusiasm internationally. Recent auctions at Sotheby's and Christie's produced a 'boom' in Indonesia art. Of special interest will be sculptures to help create our Rain Forest Sculpture Gardens, and painters and photographers to capture the early years of the Institutes. Many prominent artists have emigrated from Guyana seeking better patronage and remuneration; the present government has pledged to encourage artists to remain, perhaps on the Jagan Institute campus. Half of the art created by the Artists-in-Residence will be available through auction, perhaps through Christie's which has an office in Jakarta; proceeds will go to support the work of Orphans International Worldwide.
Highlights:
Our Chautauqua Programs Our academies will offer an abundance of adult educational programming for visitors, residents and staff. The programs will be modeled after the Chautauqua movement in the U.S., which had its beginnings in a summer training program for Sunday School teachers, started on Lake Chautauqua, New York 125 years ago - described as 'a cultural playground of concerts, ballet, opera, theater and art exhibitions.' Our Chautauqua programs will include the visual arts, including the plastic arts ' painting, sculpture, print-making, photography, film, video, decorative arts ' and those aspects of the performing arts such as ballet, theater, opera, orchestra, etc. Our academies will also encompass the sciences ' biology and geology ' language, history, sociology and anthropology. Our Chautauqua Programs will likewise incorporate indigenous arts. The freedom to discover and build a distinct tradition has encouraged artists to reveal more subtle and complex themes of expression, to develop a pride in the folk-traditions and ethnic contributions of previously submerged elements, and to build a society which can sustain a thriving artistic and intellectual community.
