Volunteer in Petersfield, Jamaica
Jamaica
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Available for alternative breaks
Description:
With tourism dominating the Jamaican economy, communities supported by traditional sugar-farming, such as Petersfield, are entering a new era in which they must act to ensure the sustainability of their communities. The Association of Clubs (AOC) was founded with this goal of individual and community empowerment in mind. Amizade first partnered with the AOC in 2003 and continues to connect volunteers to this unique grassroots organization as they work to meet strengthen the Petersfield community. Volunteers in Petersfield participate first-hand in the life of a small, rural town. Home-stays with local families and service alongside community members gives volunteers a context in which they can contribute their skills while absorbing the stories and strength of people working to build a better future for their community. Volunteer projects often include building and repairing homes for community members that lack adequate housing. Volunteers also have the opportunity to tutor at the local schools during the academic year and assist at the AOC summer youth camp or various other community or club projects when school is not in session. By contributing to already existing AOC programs, Amizade volunteers can learn about effective community organizing while volunteering their skills to the effort. Specifically, volunteers help with AOC programs such as: Youth Empowerment Summer Camp - teaching computer classes, serving as camp counselors, and tutoring. Videography Program - creating video as a tool for educating the community, raising funds, and inspiring people to action. Building Revitalization - contributing to a community park, painting the local post office, and restoring homes and community buildings. School and Hospice Visits - spending time and sharing culture with schoolchildren and people
Highlights:
You will experience the friendship, warmth, and spirit of this beautiful island nation and its people not only through your service to the AOC, but through the experience of living with a Jamaican family and by attending community events or cultural activities. A typical volunteer day in Jamaica might include work on your volunteer project during the morning with a mid day break for lunch, a game of football (American soccer) with local youth, dinner with your host family, followed by a presentation and discussion on Jamaican history and culture. In addition, volunteers can explore local sites such as the historic city Savanna-la-Mar, or the pristine beaches of Negril.
