Escuelita Yo Puedo

Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: any time, except for Christmas holidays
Description:
Building New Hope is always in need of teachers' assistants for a small day school for children of financially distressed families. The school is attended by 36 children each weekday to receive tutoring for their school work as well as new activities not offered in public schools. We stress reading with visits to our community library, field trips, "out-of-the-box" activities and study, i.e., respect for animals, keep our environment healthy, conflict resolution, etc. Volunteers are encouraged to offer new activities and 'paseandos' that will open the world to these children who otherwise have few opportunities to learn about their world.
Qualifications:
Ideally, we need a volunteer who speaks Spanish at least at an intermediate level, can commit to at least five weeks here in Granada, is creative and self-directed, works well with local teachers, can share ideas with other working partners. We welcome new ideas to open the limited world of our children. We want to bring as many new positive opportunities to them as possible. Volunteer must understand that this is not "home"....it is a developing country where the culture is probably different and at times frustrating. It is a learning experience that will be beneficial to a volunteer throughout his or her life.
