Description:
The goal of this SW Florida based program is to explore issues of water quality degradation as a consequence of the regional use of unsustainable methods for agricultural production. This assignment involves serving as a field assistant responsible for maintenance of an extensive network of flow and water quality monitoring stations and developing innovative technical solutions to field instrumentation challenges in an effort to collect scientific data in support of planning efforts to meet new water quality goals. The assignment requires the analysis and reporting of collected data, developing project websites and attending periodic meetings with project partners and as well as university level scientists. We are seeking strongly motivated students willing to assist dedicated agricultural/scientific scientists and engineers striving to explore and develop strategies to protect and enhance Florida's sensitive natural resources and restore the state's water quality, while sustaining an economically viable and compatible agricultural industry. List of tasks: - Perform field measurement tests according to specified methodology; - Collect water samples during field trips; - Process collected water samples in a laboratory; - Analyze field and lab results; - Document all activities in field logs or field data sheets; - Identify and document potential quality control problems and develop new procedures for reducing them; - Maintain field equipment in working condition; - Document all preventative maintenance and repairs.
Highlights:
The intern and visitor participants live together in a close-knit atmosphere within several dormitory houses. This mix of nationalities and individuals brings with it various benefits and complications of working and living with people of differing cultures and backgrounds. Together they take recreational trips to visit various parts of Florida. Participants have come from many nations. All nationalities are welcome to apply but those coming from overseas must be prepared to secure the appropriate visa.
