Orphan Children's Rescue Centre (OCRC)
Nepal
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: Any time.
Description:
The Orphan Children's Rescue Centre (OCRC) is a small orphanage in an unexceptional suburb of Kathmandu with fifteen orphans (nine boys and six girls), aged 1 to 10, from remote areas of Nepal. These children are crammed into just two small rooms on the ground floor of the owner's family home, and therefore have to sleep several to a mattress. To look after them are just two staff, called 'caretakers'. There are plans to construct a new and bigger building. The orphanage is very poorly resourced, and has to collect rice from houses in the neighborhood. The volunteer would need to be an exceptional person who could create something out of virtually nothing. If he or she teaches in the school attended by the older children, then the school, in return, would lower the fees charged to the orphanage.
Highlights:
A chance to pass on sound child-care practices to local staff.

Experience in child care and the ability to survive and thrive in an institution that lacks many of the basic facilities of life in the developed world. For volunteers with teaching skills, there are teaching opportunities in the school attended by the orphans.

The aim of HELP is to enhance the lives and environment of poor Himalayan communities by supporting the educational objectives of selected health, school and environmental projects.
HELP realizes its aims by enabling responsible and committed people from the developed world to:
- sponsor young people with the potential to benefit from a school or college education, but without the means to do so.
- make a donation to provide grants to individual students, and also to schools and health clinics that lack the means to acquire the materials or premises required to provide a satisfactory service to their communities.
- undertake short-term assignments as volunteers in support of educational and training projects
