Description:
The mission of the Centro de Intercambio y Solidarity (the CIS) is to promote solidarity and exchange across borders between Salvadoran people and others in the search for development and dignity. The CIS works to promote and strengthen a culture of solidarity that implies accompaniment, respect for the equality of different cultures, and mutual support between people. We focus on using different strategies to promote a solidarity that creates the space for grassroots organization for Justice and Dignity. We operate on a model of innovation and participation. Both Rural and Urban opportunities are available, with youth as well as adults.
Highlights:
* Classes are small with 6-9 students per class, with classes being held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays from 5:15-7:00pm. * Training provided for teaching English as a Foreign Language and Popular Education methodology. * Participation in several weekend excursions to various points of historical and cultural interest in El Salvador throughout the English cycle. * Assistance in finding housing, including living with a Salvadoran family. * 2 weeks free of our Political Cultural Program to learn more about El Salvador and its history. * Volunteers receive 1/2 Price on Spanish Classes.
Qualifications:
Generally, we welcome people who are open to new experiences and have a commitment to creating positive change. Teaching English for one school cycle requires that you are able to make a 10-week commitment and speak English as if it were your first language. Spanish is not necessary for teaching English, but some Spanish is helpful for daily living in San Salvador.
